Re: melocactus, do you suggest growing them as house plants? Can they endure night temperatures below 50 degrees in spring and summer? I know they need at least 6 hours of Sun.

This particular Melocactus makes for a great house plant as it stays fairly small. Roughly 7" wide and 12" tall. They also stop growing their stem once they produce their specialized inflorescence, called a cephalium.
As far as temperature is concerned, these cacti are much more sensitive. They can handle an absolute minimum of roughly 45°F. Any lower and you risk damaging the plant.
